”Matankikur” means huntsman in native northern Ainu dialect and is also said to be the roots of the word “Matagi” in Japanese meaning winter hunter (various theories exist).

Lucius Tawarabashi
Born in Canada. Inspired by his multicultural/multilingual (French, English, Japanese) background and upbringing in the natural landscapes of North America under the influence of his French father, a ceramic artist, and his mother, who worked as a translator and interpreter, he founds the “Matankikur Huntsman Woods Lodge” in 2020. Located in Hokkaido, where he shares the natural environment and the culture of northern hunting tribes with his native Canada, the lodge serves as a space for weaving the spirit of self-reliance based on the disappearing skills and culture of the Matagi hunters, as well as the collection, preservation, practice, and transmission of these aspects. Embracing the principles of "Liberty, Culture, Wealth," the lodge offers special courses conducted by a diverse group of instructors throughout the seasons on an irregular basis. Lucius Tawarabashi is member of the inaugural class of the Erv School Japan, led by the legendary bear hunter Toshiharu Kubo as the principal and trap hunter Shinya Senmatsu as instructor.
